QUANDO L’ITALIA INVENTO’ IL PC - WHEN ITALY INVENTED THE PC

   

Con la morte di Adriano Olivetti, di cui abbiamo già parlato, la società di Ivrea fu costretta a vendere tutta la parte elettronica alla General Electric, che ne rilevò tutti i progetti. Tutti, meno uno. Un progetto a cui iniziarono a lavorare il figlio di Adriano Olivetti, Roberto, e il suo braccio destro Pier Giorgio Perotto. All’epoca (si parla degli anni ’60) chi doveva effettuare dei calcoli aveva solo due opzioni: o utilizzare una calcolatrice, che stava sul tavolo ma che poteva effettuare solo le 4 operazioni di base, oppure affidarsi ad un elaboratore che, per dimensione, occupava un vero e proprio centro di calcolo, gestito da personale tecnico specializzato.  Si comincia allora a progettare una macchina, di dimensioni ridotte, che potesse autonomamente effettuare operazioni di calcolo  complesse ma che potesse al contempo stare sulla scrivania nonché che avesse un costo accessibile. Nella primavera del 1964 nasce così il prototipo della “Programma 101” : 10 registri di memoria, un facile linguaggio di programmazione basato su 15 istruzioni elementari di significato intuitivo, la possibilità di registrare dati e programmi su una scheda magnetica che funziona come un floppy disk, una piccola stampante incorporata. Il tutto in un oggetto che può stare su una scrivania. Per paura che la General Electric possa mettere le mani sul progetto, e sul prototipo, viene cancellata la parola “calcolatore” per sostituirla con “calcolatrice” fino a che, pronta la P101, questa viene presentata a New York, in un angolo molto defilato, così da non destare troppa curiosità. Speranza vana: la P101 in breve diventerà la vera star della fiera destando l’incredulità che una simile, piccola macchina non fosse collegata con alcun cavo ad un centro di calcolo nascosto in un’altra stanza.  La concorrenza cerca di correre ai ripari e nel 1967, a distanza di appena due anni dalla presentazione a New York della P101, presenterà l’HP 9100. La HP però utilizza alcune soluzioni della P101 e così deve versare somme ingenti per il pagamento delle Royalties. Purtroppo però la Olivetti non avrà le risorse sufficienti, né la lungimiranza, a supportare adeguatamente la commercializzazione del settore elettronico. Sotto il profilo astrologico, colpisce innanzi tutto come il TN di Roberto sia complementare a quello del padre Adriano: al di là della conflittualità abbastanza tipica che emerge, Roberto condivide con Adriano una grande comunanza di vedute e difatti alla morte di quest’ultimo, Roberto cercherà di portare avanti il modello paterno di lavoro e cultura. Roberto è Pesci con stellium in Casa 12, che lo rende quindi fortemente Pesci: sensibilissimo ma anche geniale nelle sue intuizioni. E’ ancora una volta  la parte complementare del padre, che invece era contrassegnato da uno stellium in Casa 6. Roberto però, in virtù di questa sua grande sensibilità, non mostra caratteristiche  tali da poterlo trasformare  in un grande manager: i suoi astri lo vedrebbero invece al lavoro in un ambiente chiuso, defilato dalla folla, concentrato su ciò che riesce a catturare la sua fantasia e la sua genialità e non curarsi, invece, di fatture, banche, competizioni aziendali.   Ad Adriano prima e a Roberto poi va il merito grandissimo di essere stati in grado di inventare una realtà all’epoca inesistente: quella di un calcolatore elettronico di dimensioni contenute, che poteva stare su una scrivania e che poi si è evoluto in quello che oggigiorno non manca praticamente in nessuna casa. Attorno a loro, però, come spesso succede in questa travagliata Nazione, la scarsa capacità di condividere con altrettanta lungimiranza la visione futurista di un mondo che verrà. With the death of Adriano Olivetti , whom we have already spoken about, the firm in Ivrea was forced to sell all of the electronics at General Electric , which took over all projects. All except one. A project at which began to work Adriano Olivetti’s son , Roberto, and his right arm Pier Giorgio Perotto. At the time (we are talking about 60s) who want to perform the calculations had only two options: either use a calculator , which was on the table but he could only make the 4 basic operations, or to rely on a computer that, by size, occupied a real data center , managed by qualified technical personnel. It then begins to design a machine, small in size, which could independently perform arithmetic operations but complex at the same time he could stand on his desk and he had an affordable cost. In the spring of 1964 thus born the prototype of the "La Programma 101": 10 memory registers, an easy programming language based on 15 elementary instructions of intuitive sense, the ability to record programs and data on a magnetic card that works like a floppy disk, a small built-in printer. All this in an object that can fit on a desk . For fear that General Electric could get their hands on the project and the prototype it was deleted the word "computer" to replace it with "calculator " until ready the P101, it was presented in New York, on a corner lot set back , so as not to arouse too much curiosity. Vain hope : the P101 in short become the real star of the show arousing disbelief that such a small machine is not connected to any cable to a computer center tucked away in another room. The competition seeks to run for cover and, in 1967, after just two years after the launch of the P101 in New York , presents the HP 9100. But the HP uses some solutions of P101 and so has to pay large sums for payment of royalties. Unfortunately, the Olivetti will not have sufficient resources nor the foresight to adequately support the commercialization of the electronics industry. Under the astrological profile, affects first and foremost as the Roberto’s Natal Chart is complementary to that of his father Adriano: beyond the conflict that emerges fairly typical, Roberto shares with Adriano a great common point of views and in fact, after Adriano's death, Roberto will try to bring forward the model of paternal job and culture. Roberto is Pisces with a stellium in House 12, which makes it so strongly Pisces: sensitive but also brilliant in his insights. And once again the complementary part of the father, who, however, was marked by a stellium in House 6. Roberto, however , in virtue of its great sensitivity, does not show such characteristics as to transform it into a great manager: its stars would see him instead to work in a closed environment, sheltered from the crowd, focused on what he manages to capture his imagination and his genius and did not care, however, bills, banks, business competitions. To Adriano and then to Roberto goes the great merit of being able to invent a reality that does not exist at the time: that of an electronic computer of reduced dimensions, which could fit on a desk and then it evolved into what we today do not lacking in virtually any home.
